The story behind Brin, Melly, and Ari
Before they became storybook characters, Brin and Melly began as chainsaw carvings. While leading Canadian international schools in Guangzhou, China, educator, author, and chainsaw artist Aaron Chavez carved a grizzly bear and an owl from a single log. As he worked, he imagined an unlikely friendship between a lonely bear and a curious little owl.
Those characters became Brin and Melly, beginning a children’s book series inspired by friendship, family, and imagination.
Ari the Raven has an equally special origin. He was inspired by one of Chavez’s favorite carvings, created for Commander Erik Dippold and the U.S. Navy’s World Famous Black Ravens. Ari brings wisdom, mystery, and a reminder that every treasure has a story.
For Chavez, the series reflects a belief shaped by more than 25 years in education: the right people and opportunities often come into our lives at just the right time, sometimes changing our journey in ways we never imagined.
